QuickCalendar, an application for Android written in Java

I’ve just released a simple utility QuickCalendar onto the Android Marketplace.

It’s a simple application that displays the current and the next (or the next two) events on the notification bar of your Android phone.

I wrote it because I miss a similar feature from my last phone, a Windows Mobile device. The trickiest part was getting access to the calendar data. There is a provider for calendar data, but unlike the contacts provider it is not part of the standard SDK. However the functionality can be obtained if you get the source (Android is open source), adjust the exported items and build your own SDK.

I may write an article on how to do this if there is demand. Also I will release the source for the application when I have OKed it with my employer. In the meantime you can use the application yourself by going to the Android Marketplace on your phone and searching for QuickCalendar.

If you are an iPhone user how can you be sure that you are getting the best out of your device? Makeuseof.com has put together a guide to enable you to use your iPhone to the full extent of it’s capabilities.
I am pleased to share with you just a few of their top tips & tricks,
1. Enable parental controls, useful when you want to restrict the content your child can access. Restrictions can be applied to all the categories of content available on the iTunes Store: music, applications, movies and TV shows.

Settings->General–>Restrictions. Tap “Enable Restrictions” and choose a four digit code. Enter it a second time for confirmation then tap the sliders according to your requirements.

2. Add new words to the iPhone dictionary, making sure that the AutoCorrect function will recognize the word you’re typing and not replace it.

Open the Notes application and type the words repeatedly. After typing each respective word at least 5 times, it should be added to the dictionary.

3. If your native language requires the input of special characters such as e and é è ë ê, just press and hold the main character on which it is based and additional characters will be displayed.

4. You can very quickly scroll back to the top of the screen by tapping on the status bar at the top of the screen.

5. Fast forward or rewind music and videos by pressing and holding the >> and << buttons.

6. Access the scientific calculator by rotating the iPhone into landscape mode (when using Calculator).

7. When receiving a call, press the sleep/hold button at the top of your iPhone once and it willsilence the ringer. Press that button twice and it will both silence the ringer and send the call to voicemail.

8. Customize the double click functionality of the Home button.

Settings->General->Home. Available destinations are Home, Phone Favorites, iPod Controls and Search.

9. You can undo typing by shaking your iPhone. If you want your text back, simply shake again

10. The fastest way to delete a single e-mail or podcast is to swipe your finger from left to right across the e-mail. That will cause a red Delete button to appear so that you can confirm that you want to delete.

Download USBAAPL.SYS driver to recognize iPhone with iTunes

USBAAPL.sys is bundled to iTunes (either v.7.7 or lower). When you installed, it is automatically put USBAAPL.sys driver in your computer.

If after installing iTunes, the computes does not recognize you iPhone (either iPhone 3G or previous models), you can try to check if USBAAPL.sys is present in C:\Windows\system32\drivers . If you could not find it there try download USBAAPL.SYS driver here:

f you have USBAAPL.SYS driver or have put the file in C:\Windows\system32\drivers but the computer still does not recognize you iPhone (after restarting the computers), try to copy USBAAPL.SYS into C:\windows\inf folderand try again. Hope that could solve your problem.

To do the update of iOS 4 is very easy:

1. Make sure you are using the lastest iTunes installed in your PC. If not sure, check the version or download iTunes.

2. Connect your iPhone with your PC/laptop and then open your iTunes. You will notice that your iPhone 4 is listed under Devices in the Source List on the left.

3. Afterwards, find button “Check for Update” in the iPhone Summary pane. Click it.

4. When ayou are ask to Download and Install, do so. The progress bar will appear and make sure you do not disconnect your iPhone 4 until all the process is finished.

That is it. You have the iOS 4 updated in your iPhone already. Enjoy!

Monica Lee pictured the 2015 “communicator phone”, the result being this iNSTINCT dESIGN which is part of the OX series. The concept handset uses wireless connectivity to transfer all the files you need at any time and it has a display on its edge, which can only show the time.

The keypad is delicate, that’s why it comes with a protective cover and in case you’re looking for a camera, there’s none to be found, or at least we didn’t find it… Notice the S shape of the device? Now that’s hot!
